Made from old-growth, hand-salvaged Western Hemlock from the Tongass National Forest in Sitka, Alaska.
Centuries ago the tree this piece came from started decaying from the inside out. The tree responded by slowing its growth and producing outer layers of dense, resinous, extra-strong wood. It was probably well over 500 years old when it fell into the ocean, with over 300 years of slow growth.
Zach designed and shaped this vessel to celebrate the beauty & tenacity of the ancient tree from where it came. It is a wonderful piece to explore, discuss, and contemplate the strength, beauty, and significance of very old trees.
