Made from an old-growth, hand-salvaged Western Hemlock tree, found floating during a storm in front of Zach's shop, in the heart of Tongass National Forest in Sitka, Alaska.
It took Zach three hours to tow this tree back to the beach below his shop—one mile in a storm, with all the branches still green and underwater... But that's nothing compared to the hundreds of years the tree grew out from a rocky cliff.
Zach shaped this vessel to show the ultra-fine growth rings and resinous wood. Hemlock normally has no pitch or resin, and yet due to harsh growing conditions: this wood is so resinous that barely visible tree resin crystals grew in the cracks around a knot. Not only are these crystals unheard of: they are beautiful in person and smell fantastic.
This is the second piece in a limited Endurance series.
